Charles Edward Newman, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of St. Mary's of the Knobs Catholic Church, passed away on February 19, 2022 at his winter residence in North Fort Myers, Florida. "Chuck" as he was known to all of his family and friends, was born March 3, 1946 in Hillsboro, Ohio to Albert and Gertrude Carroll and attended Portsmouth High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army. As a Combat Medic for the Army, Chuck saw action during two tours of duty in the Republic of Vietnam between 1966 and 1967. During his time serving with the MedEvac teams aboard the Bell UH-1 Iroquois or "Huey" helicopters, Chuck was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for his sacrifices in the efforts to save the lives of his fellow soldiers.
After the war, Chuck returned home and married Carolyn Korte on May 9, 1970. Together, they had many adventures, as both had a love for being outdoors. Much of their spare time was spent boating, skiing, fishing, camping and spending time with their family and close friends. After their two children were grown, and they had retired from work, they began spending their winters in Sarasota and North Fort Myers, Florida where they enjoyed the quiet life with old friends as well as the new ones they had made. Chuck was able to accomplish a long-time goal of salt-water fishing in his own boat on a regular basis. He loved going fishing with friends and the challenge that the fish off the coast of Florida offered him. He cherished his time spent with his children and grandchildren.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Newman, and mother, Agnes Carroll Newman. He is survived by wife, Carolyn Korte Newman; his son, Chad Newman (Holly);, his daughter, Carie Watkins (Tony); his sister, Nancy Carroll Myer; his grandson Carson Watkins; and his granddaughter, Carly Watkins.
A Mass will be held on May 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, located at 5719 St. Mary's Rd., Floyds Knobs, IN.
Following the service a celebration to honor his life will be held at the Watkins' residence at 6202 St. Mary's Rd., Floyds Knobs, IN 47119.
