John Joseph Quinkert

John Joseph Quinkert, 87, died Friday, August 8, 2014 at Providence Retirement Home in New Albany, Indiana. He was born August 12, 1926 in New Albany and was the son of the late John E. “Molly” and Marguerite Franconia Quinkert. He grew up “at the top of the hill” of Vincennes Street and Charlestown Road and was quite the prankster as a child. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and was a proud graduate of New Albany High School in 1944. John served his country as an infantryman in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Campaign. He was a retired machinist from Reynolds Metal in Louisville. John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lanesville, Pope John Paul Knights of Columbus Council #1808 in Harrison County, Hobart Beach VFW Post #1693 in New Albany, one of the original members of the Providence High School Booster Club, and a former Boy Scout Leader. He devoted many hours volunteering at his church, Providence High School, Franklin Township Athletic Club, and the old Providence Retirement Home. He enjoyed genealogy, travel, opera music, good beer, wine, and a shot of bourbon – not all at the same time.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruth Kochert Quinkert; sons, Terry Quinkert of Elizabeth, IN, Andy Quinkert of New Albany, IN, Steve Quinkert (Becky) of New Albany, IN, Jack Quinkert (Jean) of Dyer, IN, Alan Quinkert (Karen) of Sellersburg, IN; daughter, Sara Wiseman (Marty) of Lanesville, IN; brothers, Pat Quinkert (Clara) of New Albany, IN, Abbot Denis Quinkert, OSB of St. Meinrad, IN; sisters, Dodie Day (Mel) of Lanesville, IN, Sister Joann Quinkert, S.P. of Terre Haute, IN; grandchildren, Zac (Amy), Christopher, Daniel, Simon, Nick, Jacob, and Ellie Quinkert, Tiffany Norton, and Seth and Drew Wiseman.

Visitation will be 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lanesville, Indiana with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
