Brian Eddy Hawes, 79, succumbed to declining health on August 2, 2025, at The Miriam Hospital, Providence, RI. Born in New Bedford, MA, on April 23, 1946, to Thomas B. and Esther (Gifford) Hawes, Brian was the third of four boys.
Brian grew up in Dartmouth and graduated with the DHS Class of ’64. Following a year at Lowell Tech, Brian enrolled at the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Oklahoma, where he earned numerous pilot licenses and certifications. On his 21st birthday, Brian became First Officer for the Fram Auto Filters Flight Department, ascending to Chief Pilot at 26. He later held the same position for Federal Signal Corporation in Chicago, IL.
Upon returning to Dartmouth, Brian began serving on Town Meeting as well as on numerous town committees and boards. Brian was generous with his time, volunteering with Smith Neck Friends Meeting and the Apponegansett Meeting House. He loved Dartmouth’s history, government and his family’s generations of connection to that history. As part of that connection, he enjoyed the waterways of Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound, sailing, fishing and boating as often as he could manage.
Brian was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his son Timothy W. Hawes (Kelly Shultz, PhD), three brothers, Jack G. (Mary Horan), Richard A. (Bonnie Koski) and Wayne A. (Wendy Sost), as well as many nieces and nephews.
