Flora was the widow of the late Alton R. Barber, with whom she shared 41 happy years of marriage. She was the daughter of George T. Baron, a New Bedford jeweler and optician and Jennie (Gardner) Baron, a homemaker. She was also predeceased by her brother, George A. Baron and his wife Helen, of Rochester, New York.
She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and then attended Kinyon Campbell Business School. After working at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for several years, she left her job so she could stay at home and raise her two children. During that time, Flora would do bookkeeping for private clients. When her children were older, she returned to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. where she worked in the personnel office for another 17 years until her retirement in 1983.
Flora was a member of the First Primitive Methodist Church of New Bedford for 75 years where she loved to sing in the church choir. Both her and her husband taught Sunday school to the children. Flora then became a member of the Acushnet Wesley Church in 2006 after her former church closed. During her life, Flora and her loving husband sponsored several underprivileged children overseas. They also gave regularly to numerous charities, helping missionaries, orphans, and the poor for many years. She loved animals and worked tirelessly for their wellbeing and protection through her actions and generosity.
She is survived by her two sons Steven and David Barber of New Bedford and several nieces. Nancy Baron, of Holliston MA, Patricia Mills of Conesus NY, Susan Baron of Honeoye NY, and Pamila Baron Marti of Olympia WA. She will always have a loving place in our hearts.
Her family will receive relative and friends Friday, February 13, 2020 from 11 a.m. until 12 noon in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. A service will be held promptly at 12 noon in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. For online tribute/directions www.rock-funeralhome.com.
