Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a son of the late Aulie and May (MacKenzie) MacEachern, Jack grew up in Sydney and lived most of his adult life in Massachusetts, including Brighton, Brockton, Middleboro, and New Bedford.
Jack served in the Canadian Army and later worked as a driver in many capacities, including driving a garbage truck, delivering for a butter and egg farm, and working for a limousine and sedan service. Before retiring, he found his most rewarding role as a driver for disabled patients for Massachusetts Hospitals, driving young groups of patients to experience concerts, ballgames, ski trips, historic sites, and parks.
As a youth, Jack was an athlete who loved playing sports, especially hockey for his hometown team the Argyles. His entire life, he was an avid hockey fan, following the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins. He enjoyed celebrating and decorating for the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas. He also liked exploring the US by car, spending weekends with family and friends at the beach, and taking long swims in the ocean. In recent years, he enjoyed visiting casinos and eating good food with his companion Barbara Plante of New Bedford. No matter what the activity, he was happy with a cold beer in his hand.
Jack is survived by a daughter, Heather Van Doren and her partner Fritz Roberson of Toledo, OH; two sons, John MacEachern, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA and Scott MacEachern and his fiancée Linda Booth of Fremont, OH; a granddaughter, Caitlyn MacEachern of Los Angeles, CA; four sisters, June MacLean and her husband John Casey of Culpeper, VA, Jean Gordon and her husband Bob of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Donna Hiltz and her husband Corey of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and Barbara Thadani of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and a brother, Barry MacEachern of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Jack was the brother of the late Charlie and Gary MacEachern. He is also survived by devoted cousins and many loving nephews and nieces throughout the US and Canada.
Funeral services are private and in the care of the Rock Funeral Home. Donations may be made in Jack’s memory to Stand Up 2 Cancer (http://www.standup2cancer.org/).
