Born and raised in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Paul H. and Alice (Fortier) Bernard. As a child of the Great Depression, Lucille was forced to leave school early and go to work to support her family. However, being the strong, determined woman that she was, she went on to complete her education later in life. She earned her Associate’s degree from Bristol Community College and her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology at Southeastern Massachusetts University. She was a proud licensed social worker, a role that reflected her love of people and steady commitment to serving others with professionalism and care.
Lucille and the late Roger Masson were the parents of three children, Nancy Masson; Roger W. Masson and his wife Jo-Anne; Cynthia Masson and her partner Donna Lee. Her “beautiful kids” were her proudest accomplishment. Adding to her legacy are her grandchildren, Capt. Roger M. Masson, USCG and his wife Margo; Dr. Will Styler and his wife Jessica; Elizabeth Hibbard and her husband Shawn; and Katherine Mullen and her husband Patrick; her great grandchildren Hunter and Parker Hibbard; Roger W. and Oliver Masson; and Maeve and Patrick Mullen. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Lucille was predeceased by her siblings, Paul A. Bernard, Donald R. Bernard and Dorothy Zajac.
Lucille loved nothing more than keeping a clean house, a tidy yard, feeding the fish in her pond and sleeping on freshly ironed pillowcases. She also loved a trip to the casino to play her “7’s”. She was a small but mighty presence in this world who will be greatly missed by those who loved her.
Special thanks to Compassionate Care Hospice of Bridgewater and her nurse Danielle and the entire team, who helped to ease Lucille into her next journey with tender care. Thanks also to Jo-Anne and Donna who were amazing caregivers in her final days. Your grace went beyond words.
