Born in New Bedford on September 27, 1939, died March 6, 2025. Our mother lived in Fairhaven for 53 years and her last few years she resided at the Jewish Convalescent Home when she became too ill to live at home. It broke our father’s heart when he could no longer tuck her into bed at night. He visited her daily until he became too sick to do so. Our mom Lucille was born to Peter and Emiline (Marcotte) Melanson. She was one of 13 children. She was married to the love of her life John (Jack) Mello for 65 years until his passing on May 28, 2023.
She was a communicant of St. Mary’s in Fairhaven. Our mom loved her children but always professed great love for her grandchildren. “God blessed me three times. I love my kids, but oh… My grandkid and my great grandkids!”
Our mom loved our dad fiercely, as he loved her. Our mom was an amazing cook and baker. There were always cakes and delicious food in our house growing up. Our mom worked as a waitress at Pa Raffa’s Italian Restaurant for 17 years and later, she cooked for the Sacred Hearts fathers. Our mother was a loving and selfless person who always put the ones she loved before herself. She spent many years seeing us off to school then driving to her childhood home to care for her father and for her mother who had suffered a stroke.
She would come home to have dinner ready for us, then go to Pa Raffa’s to waitress until late in the evening. Our mother never complained and always had a smile on her beautiful face.
She used to sing and dance in the kitchen. Her faith was very important to her, and she drew great strength from it. She was a eucharistic minister and when she was too ill to attend mass, she and our dad would watch it on television.
Our mom Lucille is survived by her sister Carol Miller of Washington, her brother Roger Melanson of Kansas and her sister Diane Foisy of Florida. She is also survived by her children Brenda Lee Brillon and husband Ted Brillon of Rochester, her son Bruce Mello and his wife Monique Mello of Rochester, her daughter Jane Albrecht and her husband Donald Albrecht of Fairhaven, her son Christopher Mello and his wife Charlene Mello of Rochester, her daughter Karen LeBlanc and her husband David LeBlanc of Fairhaven and her son John Mello and his wife Kristine Mello of New Bedford. She has 12 Grandchildren Nicole Enos, Sarah Horta, Lauren Allain, Sheridan Mello Andrews, Alexandria Mello, Erik Albrecht, Alexander Albrecht, Cassandra Rozelle, Zachary Mello, Lindsey LeBlanc, Tyler LeBlanc, Jessica Mello and 13 great Grandchildren.
Our family would like to acknowledge Rose from Community Nursing of Fairhaven for taking such loving care with our mother.
We would also like to acknowledge Neligaah Goncalves for her care and devotion to our mother.
Her Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, 440 Main St., Fairhaven. Visitation will be held at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford on Friday, March 28, 2025 from 5:00-8:00 pm.
