Matthew Edward Forand

Born on January 17, 1979, in New Bedford, MA, Matt was the cherished son of Steven and Michelle Forand and the loving father of Evan and Sophia Forand. A proud graduate of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, Matt distinguished himself as an exemplary athlete, playing on the varsity basketball and baseball teams. His passion for learning led him to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he earned a BA in Accounting, setting the stage for a lifelong dedication to service and community.

In 2006, Matt answered the call to become a firefighter, completing the New Bedford Firefighting Academy with a fervent commitment to his new role. Assigned to Engine Co. 9, he became a steadfast presence in the department, earning the Medal of Valor in 2014 for his courageous rescue of an unconscious occupant from a burning building. His bravery continued to shine, as demonstrated by his Unit Citation for his heroic efforts during the Royal Crown Apartment fire in March 2023.

Matt was known for his loud laugh, quick wit, and infectious smile. His spirit was a beacon to everyone who knew him. His greatest joy was his role as a father. Whether coaching Evan and Sophia in youth basketball, sharing fishing adventures, or engaging in friendly games, Matt was always present and devoted. His children were his world, and he moved mountains to support them and see them achieve their dreams.

Matt cherished the special relationships he had with both his mother and father. His bond with his father, Steven, was particularly profound. They shared memorable experiences together, especially their time at the “camp” on Great Moose Lake in Harmony, Maine, and their annual hunting trips. These moments were the highlights of their relationship, reflecting a deep connection built on mutual love and affection.

Matthew leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and steadfast love. He will be deeply missed by his parents, Steven and Michelle Forand; his children, Evan and Sophia Forand; the mother of his children, Crystal Forand; his sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Michael Fortier; his niece and nephews, and all who were fortunate to know him.

Matt’s spirit will continue to inspire us all, and his memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 10:00AM in St. Gabriel the Archangel, 343 Tarkiln Hill, New Bedford, MA 02745. Relatives and friends are invited.
