Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Joan Marie (St. Jacques) Gomes and John R. Gomes, Jr. and his wife Patricia of New Bedford he was a lifelong area resident.
Roland worked as a scalloper.
In addition to his father and stepmother, he is survived by his children, Roland Gomes of New Bedford, Maranda Gomes of New Bedford, and Kelsey Gomes of AL; siblings, Anthony R. St. Jacques aka Bobby Gomes, Joan Marie Gomes, John R. Gomes, III and his wife Paula, Richard Gomes and his wife Sandra, Donald E. Gomes, Michelle L. (Barnes) Casey and her husband Daniel; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Pamela J. (Barnes) Monteiro.
