Born on May 16, 1950, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ronald was the beloved son of the late Louis W. Johnson and Willa N. Johnson. He was baptized at New Monumental Baptist Church at an early age, beginning a deep-rooted foundation of faith.
Ronald considered himself a lifelong student who deeply believed in the value of education. He graduated from Riverside High School, Class of 1968, where he proudly played in the Marching Trojans Band. He continued his education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and later earned an associate degree in engineering from Bristol Community College. During his youth, he also worked as a lifeguard at Booker T. Washington State Park.
Ronald proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge. Following his military service, he dedicated 30 years of his life as a Mail Handler with the United States Postal Service.
Outside of his work-life, Ronald found joy in music, technology, and staying active. A talented musician, he played the guitar, trumpet, and bass, expressing himself in ways words often could not. He performed in several bands throughout his earlier years and had a deep, personal connection to his music. He also enjoyed tennis, pickleball and spending time outdoors. Known for his humor, he often referred to himself as a “Backyardigan,” happiest while tending to his grill.
Ronald was the devoted husband of the late Rosemary Lou (Tavares) Johnson, with whom he shared 25 years of love, and companionship.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary L. Johnson; his parents, Louis W. and Willa N. Johnson; his brother, Robert “Truck” Johnson Sr.; his sister, Margaret Parr; his nephew, David Harris; his niece, Melissa Johnson; and his cousin, Mary Johnson.
He is survived by his son, Ronald Johnson Jr. of South Dartmouth, MA; his sister, Ruby Johnson Jones of Chattanooga, TN; his sister-in-law, Dorneata Johnson; his nephews, Alfred F. Jones Jr. of Chattanooga, TN, Robert Johnson Jr. of Pensacola, FL, and Ronald Johnson of Los Angeles, CA; his cousin, Sylvester Ceaser of Altadena, CA; and his nieces, Nancy Moore of Athens, GA, Yvetta Marshall of Commerce, GA, Rita Jones and Diana Johnson Sutton, both of Chattanooga, TN, along with numerous in-laws, extended family members and dear friends.
Ronald leaves behind a legacy of strength, courage, and kindness. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the lives he touched, the music he shared, and the meaningful moments we'll cherish.
In accordance with Ronald’s wishes, there will be no interment or memorial service due to family members residing across many states. In his own words, he leaves us with this: “I’ll see you all later.”
