William A. Tremblay, “Bill,” age 89, of Fairhaven, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Jeannette T. (Giasson) Tremblay.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late William and Rosealma (Rivard) Tremblay, he was a lifelong area resident.
A Veteran of the United States Navy, he served during World War II during the Battle of Okinawa and the Philippines as a Motor Machinist Mate Second Class and was stationed in the Pacific.
He worked for the Department of Corrections for the State of Massachusetts as a Correctional Officer for over thirty years before retiring in 1987. During his youth he worked in his father’s grocery store and was an oil delivery man.
Mr. Tremblay was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church where he was a member of their Golden Age Club. He was also a member of the Garment Workers and St. Theresa’s Club. An avid reader, he enjoyed playing bingo and cards, traveling to Foxwoods and Twin River Casino’s, and most all spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by two daughters: Susan P. Ponte and her husband Richard of Dartmouth, Diane I. Garbetti and her husband Charles of Lakeville, MA, three grandchildren; Nathan Garbetti and his wife Rachel, Heather Simmons and her husband Andy, Jessica Duclos and her husband Michael, four great-grandchildren; Adyn and Drew Simmons, Isabella and Charlotte Duclos, and several nieces and nephews. He was grandfather of the late Chad Garbetti and great-grandfather of the late Owen Simmons.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Community Nurse and Hospice Care for the wonderful care that they provided to Bill over the last couple of days.
His Funeral will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 9:00AM from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Main St., Fairhaven. Visiting hours Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care, 62 Center Street, Fairhaven, MA 02719. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Bedford.
