Born and raised in Farmville, North Carolina. Barbara was the daughter of the late Walter and Eva Mae Stocks. She started her senior year of high school at Farmville Central High School in 1957, then moved to New Bern at the age of 17 and lived with a sister. After moving to New Bern she attended New Bern Senior High School and graduated in 1958. During this time she worked at Clark's Drug Store at the soda counter. She met the love of her life Charles "Charlie" L. Cahoon, at the Colonial Store downtown New Bern. When they met Charlie told a good friend "That is the girl I am going to marry." They married on November 23, 1957, and were married for 53 years. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and community.
Barbara was a devoted member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she actively served as a Sunday School teacher and participated in Vacation Bible School. Her faith guided her daily life, and she found great joy in teaching and serving others.
She spent much of her professional life with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company, retiring in 1999 after 36 years of dedicated service.
Barbara had a deep love for reading, cooking, and spending time with her family—especially on vacations that created lasting memories for her children and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles L. Cahoon; her son, Charles L. Cahoon Jr.; her parents; siblings Walter, Carlton, Robert, E.C., Jimmie, Elizabeth Light, Eva Mae Sackleford, and Frances Faye Stocks; and her son-in-law, Doug Blount.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Charles Derek Cahoon (Tabby); daughters, Gloria Cahoon Blount and Anita Cahoon Boos (Steve); sister, Joyce Spain; grandchildren, Brandi, Mandi, Stevie, Stephanie, Melissa, Daniel, and Christopher; and eight great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Grantsbrook Nursing and Rehab Center for the loving and compassionate care they provided Barbara over the past six years.
