

Born in Beaufort, NC on August 25, 1917, Mr. French was the son of the late Louis Joseph French and Emma Davenport French. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Millie Salter French; two brothers, Harold and James French; and one sister, Emma Mae Turnage. Mr. French was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher of the men’s class for many years. He loved and praised his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, always giving God the glory in his daily life. His love for the Word of God dominated much of his time during retirement years. He enjoyed continually studying the Bible and read it cover to cover over twenty times before his eyesight failed. He was employed over ten years with an oil distribution company and worked in civil service at Cherry Point Marine Base for twelve years until retirement. Mr. French throughout his life enjoyed wildlife and nature. An avid outdoorsman, he was a commercial fisherman for many years and an active member of the Beaver Dam Hunting Club in Jones County.
Mr. French is survived by his five daughters, Durlene Coburn and husband Gordon of New Bern; Beverly Thorburn of Greensboro; Marilyn Ward and husband Jim of Lexington, SC; Melody Hudnall and husband Mike of Summerfield; and Kathy Cuthrell and husband Noah of New Bern. Seven grandchildren, Rodney Coburn of New Bern; Mark Coburn of Raleigh; Jeffrey Coburn of Lexington; Stephanie Owens of Chapin, SC; Jimmy Ward of Boston, Mass; Matthew Hudnall of Summerfield and Beverly Cuthrell of New Bern. Eight great-grandchildren, Walt and Carol Coburn of New Bern, Jeffrey and Josh Coburn of Durham, Devin and Grace Coburn of Lexington, Chase and Chandler Owens of Chapin, SC.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014, at Cotten Chapel with the Rev. Scott Gleason, Rev. Michael Pope and Rev. Leroy Alligood officiating followed by burial at Greenleaf Memorial Park officiated by Rev. Leroy Alligood. A visitation will be held 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at Cotten Funeral Home.
The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of United Hospice and CarolinaEast Medical Center for the excellent health care they provided Mr. French. Special thanks is extended to Mrs. Alice Gilbert for her home care of Mr. French.
