Ethel Lee (Dangler) Hess, 86, of New Bern, North Carolina passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at her home with her dear friend Wendy Batten by her side . Ethel was born on January 1, 1940, in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late George M. Dangler and Juanita Welch Dangler. After this introduction, Ethel will be remembered as an inspirational, kind-hearted, humorous presence—someone whose warmth could steady a room and whose wit could brighten it just as quickly.
Ethel built a long and meaningful career in customer service, beginning with Dupont and later serving for many years as a customer service representative with Verizon until her retirement. She brought patience, care, and a genuine interest in people to her work, the kind of steady professionalism that made others feel heard and helped.
Ethel was married to her beloved Willard D. Hess for 68 years before his passing—a love and partnership that shaped the heart of her life and the stories those closest to her will carry forward.
Outside of work, Ethel found joy in antiques, boating, gardening, and being an avid reader. She had a way of making everyday moments feel personal and memorable, whether she was tending a garden, sharing a laugh, or settling in with a good book.
Ethel also gave her time and spirit to the community. She was a 27 years veteran of the Craven County Master Gardener Program and a member of the New Bern Yacht Club, where she stood out in a remarkable way—she was the only female captain as of 2012. She was also part of the Pioneer Organization with Verizon, reflecting both her dedication and the respect she earned over the years.
Left to cherish her memory and continue in her legacy is her daughter Claire H. Davis and her husband Kenny of Stow Creek, New Jersey, grandchildren Jason W. Hess, Amber E. Forsman and her husband Josh, Nathan M. Long and Katie, and Noah D. Hess, great grandchildren Hayes Rodman, Willow Rodman, Charles Paul Coco, Holley Forsman, and Sydney Long.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her beloved husband Willard D. Hess and her son Lance M. Hess.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to either the American Cancer Society or Craven County Master Gardeners Volunteer Association, 300 Industrial Drive, New Bern, NC 28562.
