

Born on February 18,1939 in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Evelyn lived a life devoted to faith, family, and education. A proud graduate of Fayetteville State University and University of Connecticut, she dedicated more than 34 years to teaching in the Middletown School District in Middletown, NY, where she inspired students with her patience, encouragement, and love of learning. Her legacy as an educator lives on in the many young lives she helped shape.
Beyond the classroom, Evelyn was most proud of her role as a devoted wife,mother and grandmother. She treasured time spent with her family, whether celebrating milestones, cheering from the sidelines, or sharing simple family moments. She will be remembered for her warm heart, wise guidance, and unconditional love.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Eugene Hunter, whom she affectionately called her beloved Sam. Her daughter, Dawn Hunter-Jones, and her grandson, Quinton Jones. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 320 Pollock Street, New Bern, NC 28560. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Judes at www.stjude.org honoring her lifelong commitment to education.

Evelyn will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her family, friends, former students, and all who had the blessing of knowing her.
