Leaving behind to honor and cherish the memories and legacy of Gary are his loving wife of 33 years, Virginia Ballard; children, Travis Murphy (Lynn), Angie Murphy (Russ), and Beverly Murphy (Steve); grandchildren, Dusty Murphy, Dalton Murphy (Kelsey), Taylor Wells, Sarah Wells, Bradley Pickett, and Amber Murphy; 9 great-grandchildren; his brother, Chris Ballard (Coleen); niece, Natalie Ballard; nephew, Alex Ballard; and many loving family members and close friends.
Gary attended the Carolina Military Academy in Maxton during his high school years. He received his college education through Craven Community College and Louisburg College. After college he joined his family’s business, Ballard Tire & Oil, helping with tire sales and in the accounting department.
Gary loved his church and was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he shared his love of music by singing in the Sanctuary and Senior Adult Choirs. Throughout his life he played the organ, flute, drums, accordion and piano. Gary enjoyed traveling, swimming, woodworking, going to the movies and going out to eat. He loved animals (especially dogs) and he loved to laugh. But most of all he loved his family and his Savior.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00-11:00 am on Monday, September 2, 2024, at Tabernacle Baptist Church. A celebration of Gary's life will begin at 11:00 am, followed by a reception in the Family Life Center. Gary will be laid to rest at 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
Special thanks to Home Instead owners, J.D. Bobbitt & Lee Norris. Thanks to all of Gary’s caregivers, especially the ones that were with him in his last days - Takecia “Tee” Bright, Jabria Hill and Arin Lamm. Thanks to 3HC Hospice.
