Gerry Schulz

She is survived by by her beloved husband of 53 years, F. Peter Schulz, daughter, Nancy Schulz Preston (Chris) of Wilmington, NC, one grandson, Conerly Allyn Preston, two nephews, William Schulz of MD, Peter John Schulz of VA, two nieces, Katherine Schulz of CA, and Maggie Durham of VA.

Gerry was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in New Bern, and a former member of Christ Lutheran Church, Islip Terrace, NY. She was very active in both churches, helping to start two new worship services at St. Andrew, and serving on the Church Council at Christ Lutheran.

Gerry was a graduate of Friends Academy, and a graduate of Roanoke College, class of 1966. After her school she began a lifelong career as elementary school teacher. The majority of her 30 year teaching career was spent at Wyandanch Elementary School in NY.

She was very involved in her community. She volunteered with Guardian ad Litem, providing services to children and their families in the court system. She also volunteered her time with Religious Community Services (RCS,) mainly serving meals to those in need. Gerry was a strong supporter of environmental organizations, including Sound Rivers and Coastal Federation, and the arts, specifically the Metropolitan Opera and the North Carolina Symphony.

She was a member of Taberna Country Club as well as the New Bern Yacht Club. Gerry was an avid sailor. She was happiest on her sailboat with her husband. Together they traveled the world, visiting places such as Croatia, Greece, Tahiti, Seychelles, and the Caribbean Islands. Of all her travels her favorite place in the world, besides home, was the British Virgin Islands.

Gerry will always be remembered as a loving, compassionate individual, who never seemed to know a stranger. She was supportive of so many people. She was a funny, witty, wonderful lady that everyone knew and loved. She was proud of her family and we hope to continue her legacy.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00am, Saturday, February 05, 2022, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in New Bern. Rev. Dr. Ted Rust will be officiating.
