James Joel Bretzius

He is survived by his wife, Hunter Stephenson Bretzius, son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Shana Bretzius, brother, John Bretzius, sister and brother-in-law, Steve and Joan Maynard, sisters-in-law Katherine Stephenson and Anne Buresh and niece and nephew Anne Patterson and Hunter Buresh.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Gertrude Bretzius.

Jim was a Marine who served in the Vietnam War. He was the former publisher of the Havelock News and Windsock and previously worked at the Tampa Tribune, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Gaston Gazette and State College, Pa. newspapers. A native of Clearwater, FL, he enjoyed sailing, a good book, a dirty martini and great cigar.

He hitchhiked to Mexico before turning 18 and never shied away from an adventure or the retelling of many legendary stories once prompted. We will remember his easy smile, sharp wit, devotion to family, and love of the Neuse River.

A private service will be held with his family at a later date. Memorials may be made to Colonial Capital Humane Society.
