Janie Marie Haskins

She was born to Ernest and Rita Jostes in the Bronx, New York on August 16, 1946, one of three charismatic “Jostes sisters.” Janie was known for her spontaneous smile, caring personality and beautiful, strawberry blonde hair.

After graduation in the 1960’s, Janie worked in midtown Manhattan at the prestigious Pan-Am building, as it was then called. Soon after she met and married the love of her life, John F Haskins Jr. Together, they had two children: Tina and John and many pets mostly Dalmatian dogs, along with several “non-approved” pets their children bullied them into taking in (cats, parrot, horse, rabbits, fish, etc). They enjoyed several decades of family life, boating, and travel until her husband, John, sadly passed too soon in April 2005.

A devout Roman Catholic, Janie stayed strong during difficult times with her faith guiding her. She was an exceptionally kind person with a sharp mind and deep inner strength. She was known for her unwavering encouragement and support of her friends and family. Janie was known for her signature cardigans in every color, her love of a good candy (Whopper’s, Peeps & Russell Stover chocolates were often found in her secret stash), her unlikely television viewing combinations of BBC’s Ms Marple series and sci-fi movies like Sharknado, a recent favorite. Janie loved to spend time visiting with her three grandchildren and catching up with dear friends, especially her childhood friend, Daphne Beck.

Janie is survived by her daughter, Tina Haskins, son, John Haskins, son-in-law, Surya, daughter-in-law, Amy, three grandchildren, Kirin, Niklas and Amaya, as well as her two sisters, Judith and Margaret, brother-in-law’s Kevin and Marty, sister-in-law Loretta, and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, August 25, 2023, at St. Paul Catholic Church. Following the service, John Jr. and Janie will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
