

John Robert Baxter, Jr a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and teacher, passed away peacefully at his home in Trent Woods on the morning of Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the age of 84. Born in New Bern on May 21, 1940, John is preceded in death by his parents John Robert Baxter, Sr and Grace Smith Baxter, sister Barbara Gaskins Stevenson, and wife of 50 years Linda Matthews Baxter.
In his youth, John discovered a passion for photography, a talent he cultivated while working at the family business, Baxter's Studio, in the 1950s. Through his work, he developed a keen eye for detail and an artistry that brought life to countless images. His talent was well-known, and his photos were treasured by many in his community.
John attended UNC Chapel Hill before graduating from East Carolina University, where he was also a member of the swim team. Initially, he began his career as a social worker but found his calling in education with Craven County Schools, ultimately teaching at West Craven High School. As a teacher, he inspired generations of students and teachers alike, his influence extending beyond academics and into the hearts of those he guided. His dedication to students, especially those in need of extra support, left a profound impact. John also served as a coach, where he instilled in his athletes the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
In retirement, John continued to enjoy many hobbies: fishing, billiards, card games, music, photography, and cherished spending time with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. A dedicated member of the New Bern Elks, John served as Exalted Ruler several times, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, and was a passionate advocate for the Elks Scholarship Fund. His service also extended to the Masons and the National Guard Reserve.
John is survived by his children, Jim Baxter and his wife Jennifer, Kathy Roberts and her husband Dan, as well as his cherished grandchildren, D. Merritt Roberts and Matthew Roberts. He also leaves behind his longtime companion and friend, Faye Rotz, who brought him comfort and joy in his later years.
A graveside service to honor John’s life will be held on Friday, November 8, at 11:00 a.m. at New Bern Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the local Elks Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1284, New Bern, NC 28561, to continue John’s legacy of supporting youth and their education.
John Robert Baxter will be remembered as a dedicated family man, a gifted artist, a caring educator, and a loyal friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warmth, guidance, and passion for life leave a legacy that will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the many lives he touched.
