William J. Hughes and Julia Shea in Englewood, N.J. She went home to be with her
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 2, 2019, surrounded by loving family and
friends.
Lorraine grew up in the Empire State, near Queens N.Y. and boy did she ever love her
Mets baseball team. She attended St. Joseph’s High School and Pratt Art Institute in New
York City and excelled in art and enjoyed learning legal shorthand. She always had an
eye for fine art and loved to draw and paint. Lorraine was the most fun loving, friendly
person you could ever hope to meet and her smile made everything just “fine”.
Lorraine loved nature, her dogs and living by the water. She shared many childhood
memories of the family farm on Prince’s Bay on Staten Island, N.Y. She would always
speak fondly of the days on “Poppas” farm. She and her family would spend the summer
months on the farm so her grandfather could work the farm and not be alone. She always
remembered and said, “I loved to look at the rows of sunflowers, vineyards and delighted
eating the large platters of fresh corn and vegetables Poppa would bring to the table”.
Lorraine married Robert Augusta Gerardi and settled on Long Island in Smithtown, New
York. Lorraine’s life was very full being a loving wife and mother of 4 children and
attending the local Christian Women’s Club. She worked as a legal secretary for decades
from the N.Y. District Attorneys office to several Long Island Law firms. Oh, she was
quick witted and proud of her Pittman shorthand to transcribe for many attorneys. Her
kids would often laugh at the notes she would leave that were written in a hurry in
shorthand and no-one could ever understand but her.
Bob and Lorraine made their big move to Fairfield Harbour in New Bern, N.C. in
December 1993. It was through a time share offer posted at the Smithton Bay Yacht Club
that lured them to come “South”. They visited New Bern, loved it and this was truly
home!
Lorraine had a servant heart. Fairfield Harbour was full of “things to do” and she easily
got plugged in and served simultaneously as the secretary to the Fairfield Garden Club,
the Fairfield Harbour Beacon and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. She served as Bob’s right
hand mate on the boat, loved to paint and attended many one stroke art classes with her
friends. She later began attending Tabernacle Baptist Church where she loved to worship
her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She served for over a decade in the New Bern chapter
of the Christian’s Women’s Club as their secretary and coordinated the local friendship
Bible studies. Lorraine was excited to share her home for Bible study and inviting new
friends. In fact, she was named “queen for a day” for brining the most women over time
to enjoy fellowship and learning from God’s word. She was truly an example of a faithful
servant who has now heard, “well done good and faithful servant”.
Lorraine is survived by her 4 children; Bonnie (Howard), Christopher (Vickie), Joyce Ann and Timothy (Tammy) and
her devoted dog Dorothy. She was extremely blessed and proud of her 10 grandchildren
and 8 great grandchildren.
The most precious gift she leaves us now is her faith in God.
Her favorite scripture verse was Proverbs 3:5-6, which serves to encourage each of us to
live our lives depending on the God who is sovereign and holds all things together:
Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
