Mary Esther Mathison

Mary Esther Mathison, 85, of New Bern, North Carolina went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Mary was born on January 3, 1938 in Lenoir County, North Carolina to the late Ashley Heath and Carrie Riggs Heath.

Mary had strong faith in her Lord which guided her throughout her life. She was strong, a fighter, selfless, dedicated, kind, joyous and happy her whole life. She had a servant's heart to anyone in need and never hesitated to give of her time and love. Her grandson never missed an opportunity to spend time with his grandmother as his love for her was as strong as hers was for him. Many people called her an angel ... well now she has received her wings. She will be forever missed by all who had the honor to know and love her.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sherry Franklin and Kelli Gountikas; grandson, Brandon Gountikas; granddaughter, Hannah Mathison; nieces, Irma Jean Kennedy (who was like a daughter to her) and Joyce Cappolella; nephew, Leamon "Earl" Outlaw; and lifelong friend, Irene Bailey (who was like a sister to her).

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by sisters, Gertrude Jackson and Ruth Cauley and brothers, Ashley Heath, Jr. and Eldon Heath.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Pastor Bob and his wife, Willie, for their unending love and support for their mother. They were always there for Mary at a moment's notice and provided the love of Christ to get her through any situation.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023 at Cotten Funeral Home with Pastor Bob officiating.
