Michael "Mike" Timothy Smith

Michael "Mike" Timothy Smith, 79, of New Bern, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Mike was born on May 6, 1942 in Alamance County, North Carolina to the late James Smith and Pauline Compton Smith.

Mike loved to be by the water especially fishing and traveling to the beach. He also enjoyed traveling with Gail to the mountains. Mike was a jack of all trades, there was nothing he did not know a little something about. Whether traveling to the mountains or the ocean he never knew a stranger. Mike had an uncanny ability to meet new people and get to know them. He liked woodworking and carpentry. During the families years of living in Bridgeton he was a volunteer with the Bridgeton Fire Department, as well as, being the Bridgeton Police Commissioner. Mike was a story teller he had some of the best stories to share about all of his life's adventures.

Mike was a kindhearted loving man who wanted to serve and help his community. In addition to loving his family he owned and operated the Curtis Motel for over 40 years. During those years owning the motel Mike would sacrifice rooms in order to give them to the homeless. He not only gave them a place to sleep he would also feed them and help them find work. Mike was a selfless man who was devoted to his wife, family and the community. He will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Patricia Gail Brackett Smith, three children; Debbie Farnham and husband, Shannon, Melanie Ipock and husband, David and son Alex Smith and wife, Christine, eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and brother, Richard Smith and wife, Coleen.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Craven County Hospice for their kindness, generosity, care and compassion for Mike and their entire family.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Cotten Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel with Pastor Mike Williams officiating.
