Pauline was born and raised in a Cumberland Plateau valley in eastern Tennessee. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from University of Tennessee in Home Economics. As the first person in her family to venture away from Tennessee in 5 generations, she came to North Carolina in search of employment and after a few years teaching in the piedmont area of NC she came to Pantego, (in Beaufort County) where she met and married Irving Robbins as WW II was beginning.
In 1948, they settled in New Bern where Irving became County Agent for the Farmers Home Administration and Pauline taught Home Economics at Pamlico County High School for 3 decades until her retirement in 1980.
She was a founding member of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a steadfast supporter of Centenary Methodist Church. Always a great traveler, she spent her retirement years traveling with friends and visiting family. She found great joy in watching her grandsons mature, marry, and begin their own families.
Much of the last decade was spent helping care for her older sister, Levona, in Dayton, TN. In more recent years, she came to reside at The Carolina House in Morehead City to be near her son who had retired to the area. There she found many new companions and friends.
On August 14, 2011, she passed away gracefully from the accumulated effects of having lived a full, long, active and constructive life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving Robbins; parents, Harvey and Anna Hamby of Pelham, TN; and siblings: Arley Hamby of Manchester, TN, Randal Hamby of Hillsboro, TN, Levona Tipps of Dayton, TN and Blanton Hamby of Pelham, TN.
She is survived by one son, Edward Robbins and wife, Susan of Morehead City, NC; three grandsons: George Robbins and wife, Camaryn Christman Robbins of Montreal, Canada & Memphis, TN; John Robbins and wife, Barbara Ortiz Robbins of Fairfield, CT; Drew Robbins and wife, Alison Verneuil Robbins of Chicago, IL; four great grandchildren: Dorian Robbins, Scarlett Robbins, Phoebe Robbins and Reid Robbins; one sister, Deane Shockley of Knoxville TN and two sisters-in-laws: Jane Hamby of Hillsboro, TN and Bernice Cannon of Yatesville, NC.
