Richard had been married to Jean for 69 years and had loved her since the age of 12. Richard has lived in the New Bern area since the age of 11. He grew up to design and build many of our local New Bern structures including the kitchen and stable to Tryon Palace. This work was done while running Skinner Construction Co. originally founded by his father, Mark Skinner. Richard was always an outstanding athlete and an outdoor enthusiast throughout his life, from being an all-star NBHS football player to a major advocate in saving the Neuse River from pollution. He was very proud of the fact that he was a Mason for over 65 years. He was a member of Doric Lodge No. 568, New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies and Sudan Shriners. He was a scholar of the Bible and a Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years.
He had four children, one of which passed 67 years ago, his junior, Leslie who he was excited to be reunited with once again. Leslie passed away from complications of Spina Bifida at the young age of 16 months. As a result, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to sbevents.org.
Richard is survived by his three children, Judy Boyd (Roger), Danny Skinner (Sharon), and Marie Tingle (Paul). Richard had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
His graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, January 5, 2019 at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
