Born on January 14, 1935, in Warren, Pennsylvania, Bob was one of four children. He and his brother proudly enlisted in the Air Force Cadet Training Program on August 17, 1954, a formative step that would shape his lifelong dedication to service and innovation.
Bob earned his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1959 and went on to complete a master’s degree in Experimental Psychology while working at Martin Marietta in Denver, Colorado. His career took him to Honeywell in Minneapolis, MN, where he contributed to the space program by designing ergonomic displays and control panels. Later, as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bob played a key role in the development and implementation of the high mounted brake light—an innovation that remains a standard safety feature in vehicles today.
Bob had a zest for life and a passion for the outdoors. He especially loved sailing, but also enjoyed hunting and fishing. A talented cook, he found joy in preparing meals for friends and family.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia “Pat” Nicholson; two sons from his previous marriage, Robert Nicholson and his wife Fe, and Steven Nicholson and his wife Marion; and their two children, Alexander and Jessica. He is also remembered by Pat’s children: Mike West and his wife Amy, and their son Michael; and Lynda Perry and her husband Wendell, and their children Robert, Ashley, and Spencer.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Bob will be remembered for his brilliant mind, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family and country. Those who knew him will also cherish his charming personality, quick wit, and great sense of humor.
Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory is honored the family and friends of Robert “Bob” Martin Nicholson.
