Vaneda grew up in Conehatta, Mississippi, and carried that strength, warmth, and steady spirit with her throughout her life. She later made her home in Kinston, North Carolina, where she raised her children and lived for more than 45 years.
She spent her career working for the Social Security Administration until retirement, showing up each day with dedication and quiet determination.
Vaneda found joy in the simple, meaningful things — a good book, a daily crossword puzzle, and time spent with the people she loved most. She was a voracious reader, sharp as ever, and always had a way of making others feel cared for. She had the kind of laugh that filled a room — the kind you never forget.
Above all else, Vaneda’s greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved them deeply and took such pride in them: Helen Graham, Sarah Jane, Ava Laine, and Webster Hall. Being their grandmother was one of the greatest honors and happiest roles of her life.
Vaneda was selfless in the truest sense — always giving, always thinking of others, and never expecting anything in return. Her love was steady, quiet, and unconditional.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah Jane Steve.
Vaneda is survived by her children: Aira (Graham) Underhill, Ythan (Ashlee) Webster, and Alexis Hatton, along with the many family members and friends who loved her dearly.
The family will hold a small celebration of life with close family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Bern Cancer Center in her honor.
