

Dr. Vincent P. Gillen passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015. He was 97 years old. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Margaret Deterling Gillen; children, Nancy Talbott and her husband Jim of New Bern, Donald Gillen and his wife Cheryl of Ravena, NY, and David Gillen and his wife Julie of Baltimore Md.; grandchildren, Taryn Clark (Eric), Christopher Talbott (Elizabeth), Heather Malick, and Justin Gillen (Stephanie); great grandchildren, Lilliana Clark, Alexandra Clark and Brady Malick.
He is predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Anna Gillen, and brother, Joseph Gillen.
Vincent served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was a graduate of SUNY Albany and received his master's degree and Doctorate from Columbia University. He served as an educator in the N.Y. State school system as teacher, principal and superintendent of schools over his 38 year career.
Vincent enjoyed carpentry and visiting with friends. He took great joy in helping friends and neighbors with any projects. For relaxation, he was a big fan of the NY Yankees and Notre Dame Football.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 2 pm at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church on Country Club Road in New Bern. Family will receive friends following the service.
