Clinton was born on December 18, 1932, in Fashing, Texas to George Julius Brandt and Mary Louise nee Knetsch Brandt. Clinton graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1951. While in High School, Clinton met the love of his life, Doris Ann Wegner (Mousie) at the Capital Theater where they both worked. Clinton and Doris married on August 27, 1955, at the First United Methodist Church in New Braunfels and would embark on the most romantic love story. They would have celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary this August.
The day following his High School Graduation, Clinton began his basic training in the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Force Bace and later at Shepard Air Force Base. Eventually, Clinton was sent to Airborne Electronics school where after his training he was asked to become an instructor. When the Air Force needed Volunteers to go to Korea in 1954, he answered the call. Toward the end of the conflict, he was sent to a troop carrier squadron in Japan and was quickly promoted and put in charge of the squadron’s electronics. He was a Staff Sargent. For his service, Clinton was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.
After returning to New Braunfels in 1955, he began his career with the Federal Aviation Administration working on several of the ground navigation systems until his retirement some thirty years later.
Clinton’s volunteer service was not limited to one area of interest. In 1990 he was elected to the New Braunfels City Council and a year later he served as “Burgermeister” (Mayor) of the city he loved so much. He was a Fund Drive Chairman for the United Way and him and Doris spent many years delivering Meals on wheels. Clinton was a member of the Evening Lions club, where he served as President. With five children in school, he involved himself in the volunteer opportunities available. He was a member of the New Braunfels PTA; he did a two-year term as Band Booster President and volunteered with the New Braunfels Little League. Clinton taught Sunday School, and he served as the Superintendent of Sunday School and was on the Church Council of First Protestant Church. In 1973 Clinton’s greatest pleasure was when he became a member of the Wurstfest Association where he served on almost every committee. He was on the Board of Directors as Wurstfest President in 1988, he earned the title of Grosse Opa an finally Opa Emeritus. For all his extraordinary contributions to so many, in 2016 he was named a Living Legend of New Braunfels, which is how he will remain in our hearts.
Clinton’s professional career went beyond a job, he was all about getting people to the right place at the right time which is why he was so intrigued with the restoration, repair and maintenance of the mechanical tower clock at First Protestant Church. The clock was installed in 1905 and is one of the few remaining mechanical clocks remaining in the United States. When the clock stopped working in the late 1970’s, he volunteered his expertise and determination to fix and maintain the clock. Every week for over 30 years, he would wind and maintain the clock.
