Doris Lois (Patrick) Mears was born in Houston, Texas on September 23rd 1922. She lived her early years in Alvin, Texas and attended Alvin High School where she was a Yellow Jacket Cheerleader. She met her high school sweetheart (our dad) William Elvin Mears, whom most knew as Bill. Dad was an athlete whom excelled at football, basketball and track. Mom and Dad married and had four children, Roger, Sherry, Donald, and Troy. Our Dad worked for Dow Chemical and after Roger, Sherry and Don all left home, they took Troy, at about 7 years of age, and moved to Lake Jackson where they built a new home nearer to Dad’s work. They stayed in Lake Jackson until our Dad’s retirement and moved into their dream home on Canyon Lake, Texas where they had a full exciting retirement.
Mom and dad made many friends in the Canyon Lake area. As you know, our mom was a social butterfly. She made good lasting friends wherever she went. Mom and Dad had a great group of friends through their church and they regularly met at the house for social events, fish fries (freshly caught by dad in the lake) or the weekly Friday night games of Mexican Train tournaments!
Our dad passed away in 2002 following several years of declining health where mom took care of his needs until shortly prior to his death. Following dad’s death, mom continued to live in Canyon Lake and was joined a few years later by our sister Sherry (Mears) Marsteller who moved to be near mom following Sherry’s retirement. Sherry passed away in 2014, but mom continued to thrive in Canyon Lake where she remained until about 6 years prior to her death when her declining health required that she relocate to Angleton, Texas and into Country Village assisted living facility near Troy’s home. Mom continued her game days there and had many close friends over for hamburgers and game nights in her room. Her circle of friends even expanded while she was there and she was named the 34th annual Country Village Assisted Living Queen! She remained at Country Village until her death on October 31, 2021 at the age of 99 years old. Our mom was preceded in death by our Dad and our sister Sherry.
As many of you know, our mom was a woman of many talents and she put them to good use! She loved to bake and cook. Some of our earliest memories of her were over the stove or oven working on a wedding cake, pies, cookies or dinner. She loved sharing her knowledge with others as well. She taught her sons, daughters-in-laws, friends and family about her exceptional cooking skills and wonderful recipes.
Mom was well known for her truly “Out of this World” spicy bars. These Spicy Bars were even requested and enjoyed by the Shuttle Commander, Steve Lindsey, and the crew of the Space Shuttle Mission STS-121 that launched on thttps://admin.mem.com/sso/newde/10426844#contententry/familyhe 4th of July, 2006. As a result, mom received an autographed shuttle mission plaque that contained a special note to her, as well as the mission pin, patch and picture from all of the crew!
Mom also made beautiful multi-layered wedding cakes for many a new bride as well as for her children. These cakes would be adorned with golden gilded leaves, columns, white sugar bells, beautiful icing roses and delicate white doves. She truly was an artist and was highly sought after for her cakes.
Our mom also loved to paint on canvas as well as porcelain. There is many a home that has one (or many) of her beautiful paintings in it. She painted landscapes, and still art in both oils and water colors. She has completed many sets of porcelain dolls and nativity sets. She was a very talented artist and her works will continue to remind us of how truly blessed we were to have these lasting memories of her in our homes.
Our mom peacefully passed away in Country Village assisted living facility in Angleton, Texas on October 31st 2021.
As her children, we grew up with the most incredible role model. She taught us to love God, family, and have strong morals, be responsible, dependable, and trustworthy. Mom also passed these values on to her many Grand Children, Great-grand Children as well as her Great-great Grandchildren.
We want to thank you again for being here today to honor our mom. She loved all of you and her memory will live on in all of us.
