Gertrude “Trudy” Luehlfing, 95, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 7, 2021. She was a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church. The family will hold a service in New Braunfels, Texas.
Trudy was born in Desoto, Missouri, and spent her early years with her “Granny” (Rosie Jane Hill) and her “Aunt Sue” (Susie Hill). Both women played significant roles in her life. Trudy always said that her Granny taught her how to pray, a practice that served her throughout her life. She often stated that she was blessed all the days of her life.
Trudy met her future husband, Walt, in 1951, when he was stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. They were married on February 3, 1952. After their wedding, they returned to Walt’s home in New Braunfels, Texas. Their life journey carried them to Houston, Texas, and then Chattanooga, Tennessee, before moving to Jackson in 1969.
Trudy was active in her church and community. After volunteering at the school, McLeod Elementary asked her to assume the school secretary position in 1972. She enjoyed working with the students, faculty, staff, and parents at McLeod for 15 years, and she was a beloved member of the school community. In addition to her job at McLeod and raising three sons, Trudy loved making art, taking a course at Millsaps College to hone her skills and continuing to draw and paint throughout her life. She loved connecting with people, and she treated everyone she met as a friend. Whether she was meeting with her small group at church or simply getting her hair done, she always found someone to share stories with.
Trudy is preceded in death by her loving husband Walt, her Granny, Aunt Sue, and her infant twin sons, Matthew and Mark. She is survived by her three sons, Michael, Martin, and Monte, Monte’s wife, Beverly, and her much-loved grandson, Blake. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews in Texas, as well as her dear friend Cora. The family would like to thank all of Trudy’s neighbors for looking out for her over the years, especially Eddie, whose friendship and kindness she cherished. The family would also like to thank her doctors, nurses, and therapists from throughout the years, as well as her caregiver, Daphne, whom Trudy had quickly grown to love.
Memorials may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, 805 North Flag Chapel Road, Jackson, MS 39209, or a charity of your choice.
