

John was born to Jack and Lorena Northcutt on August 8, 1936, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and moved to Tyler, Texas for his senior year in high school, where he met his wife of 55 years, Barbara Ellen Cupp. They married in 1957 and began their married life in Austin, Texas, while John finished his degree at the University of Texas. Upon graduation, they moved to Fort Worth, Texas where John began his lifelong career in banking. He continued his banking career of almost 50 years in Houston, McAllen, and San Antonio until his retirement to New Braunfels. During his distinguished career, he was President of the Alamo Bank of Texas for 17 years, served as President of the Rio Grande Valley Chamber of Commerce, and served on the boards of Texas Banker’s Association, Independent Banker’s Association of America, and Independent Banker’s Association of Texas. John also served on the advisory boards for Baylor University School for Community Bankers and the Texas Tech University School for Bankers.
John had many hobbies and interests, including fishing, painting, music, and traveling. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, including the eleven grandchildren he adored. Grampa was an enthusiastic audience member for many artistic performances by his grandkids and a proud fan at their sporting events.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara, and their four children: David and wife, Callie, of Tyler, and their children, Patrick, Graham and Mary Ellen; Judith and husband, Bill Bryant, of Austin, and their children, Rebecca, Jane, Will and Johnny; Dan and wife, Cherri, of Katy, and their children, Danielle and Natalie; and Jenni and husband, Steve Roddy, of New Braunfels, and their children, Emma and Sam. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Glenda and Jim Smith of Mineral Wells, their children and grandchildren, his uncle, Wesley Northcutt of Oregon, and numerous cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lorena Northcutt, and his mother-in-law, Viola Cupp.
The family will receive visitors at Zoeller Funeral Home, 615 Landa St., New Braunfels, Texas, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 23. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Oakwood Baptist Church in New Braunfels, Texas. Graveside services will be held in Tyler, Texas on Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery, with a reception to follow.
