Born November 27, 1923 in Prairie Hill Texas, to Tom and Mamie Vinson Suttle, Millye was the youngest of four children. She grew up on a cotton farm and graduated high school at the age of 16 and went on to study business at Tehuacana Junior College until she was expelled for hooliganism involving cows on the second floor of the Administration Building. Subsequently she was reinstated and graduated, going on to work for the telephone company in Waco, Texas. There she met a young Army Air Corps pilot in training from Fruita, Colorado, Lt. Roscoe Omer Brown Jr. They were married August 3, 1943 in El Paso TX. Lt. Brown served in Italy during WW II as a bomber pilot.
When her husband returned and was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Millye embraced the life of a military wife with enthusiasm, traveling to various bases in the U.S. and overseas.
In Germany, the family lived off-base immersed in the community and established a number of German friends with whom she kept in touch over the years. Their home in Tripoli, Libya was also off-base and near local markets. Millye enjoyed swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, only a few miles from home, and exploring nearby ancient Roman ruins. In Japan, she spent time learning Japanese customs and culture. Her stay was cut short with the tragic death of her husband in a plane crash.
When Millye returned to the U.S. following her husband’s death, she settled in San Marcos as a single parent and successfully raised the family on her own. She participated in her children’s activities but carved out a place of her own as she joined the church choir and established a circle of friends. She was active with the community serving as a Red Cross representative during Hurricane Carla.
Following a brief marriage to Arthur Theis in Thorndale, Texas Millye moved to New Braunfels, Texas. After her children left home, she studied drawing, photography, ceramics, fabric arts and jewelry, designing her daughter-in-law’s wedding ring. Her home was filled with the results of her many projects and her yard reflected her love of plants. She could stick a twig in the dirt and it would grow! Family and friends were frequent recipients of her many plant projects.
In 1977, Millye joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a very active member of her ward for most of the rest of her life. Among other callings, she served a mission in Alabama and worked in the temple.
Millye was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister Lois and husband Olin Rivers; brother Glyn Suttle and wife Mildred; brother Jay B. Suttle and wife Berta, their son Gary; daughter-in-law Debra Brown; and son-in-law L. Dale Webb.
