Valerie M. Geter, 34, a resident of New Braunfels, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 5, 2012, at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, from complications stemming from a benign brain tumor.
Valerie was born on August 4, 1978, in Detroit, MI, to Gary and Bernadette Allman. Valerie attended middle school at The Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, where on July 17, 2004, she married fellow Immaculate Heart of Mary alum, Rodney Geter. Valerie is survived by her husband, Rodney, and her two children Asia Allman, 14, and Hunter Geter, 7. She is also survived by her father and step mother, Gary and Thelma Allman, Richmond, TX; brothers Gary and Timothy Allman, San Diego, CA, and Queen Creek, AZ, respectively; and step brothers Shiloh Bursey and Darrell Gordon, both of Houston, TX. Valerie was preceded in death by her mother, Bernadette Allman, and her grandparents William and Everee Daggett and Pettis and Orene Allman.
Valerie attended high school at Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, MI, where she created and sustained unbreakable bonds of friendship. Throughout her life, Valerie felt called to nursing. In pursuit and completion of that dream, she received her associate’s degree in nursing from Galen College of Nursing in San Antonio. She began her nursing career in 2006 as a phlebotomist, eventually transitioned to an emergency room tech, later advanced to become a licensed vocational nurse, and, prior to her death, became a registered nurse at Christus Santa Rosa in New Braunfels.
Valerie had varied interests, but her biggest loves were her family, friends, community, nursing, and reading. She was compassionate, loyal, driven, funny, and goofy. Valerie could be counted on in any crisis. She strongly believed and demonstrated Kalu Kalu’s words, “The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy.” Because of her commitment to helping others, Valerie’s legacy is evident in her two children, who also continually strive to serve others.
The family would like to thank the community of friends, family, and coworkers who have offered assistance during Valerie’s illness and upon her death. There are no words sufficient to express the depths of their gratitude. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to a memorial fund established for the benefit of Valerie’s children at Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union. You may contact Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church at 830-625-4531 for more information regarding the memorial fund.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, October 13, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 198 W. Bridge St., New Braunfels, TX 78130.
