Woodie’s first job was in radio in Sweetwater, TX. After a brief 3-year stint in the Navy he moved to Ft. Worth and worked in radio and TV. He produced the Dallas Cowboys football games on the Texas State Network, was the eye-in-the-sky doing helicopter traffic reports, and on-air news reporting at KFJZ. He reported the farm and ranch report and news reports on WBAP. A highlight (or lowlight if you know Woodie at all) of his broadcasting career was covering the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami. He joined the Air Force in 1973 and loved his job and the travelling. While in the Air Force Woodie met and stayed in touch with many wonderful friends. When he retired from the Air Force teaching became his gift. He was a great teacher who taught Government, History, and Economics at Clark HS, Stinson MS, Smithson Valley HS and San Antonio College. He impacted thousands of students in his classes. Woodie was an ardent fan of Ranger sports. After retiring from Smithson Valley HS he continued to attend both football and softball games often traveling with the team to watch them play. He supported UTSA football, attending all the home games and tailgating with his family and friends.
Retirement gave Woodie the chance to teach part-time at SAC, search for bargains on the internet, work on his numerous projects and travel the world. Woodie loved genealogy-he was working with his “internet cousins” to map the Meyer, Ellison, Harris, and Lewis families. He spent hours trying to identify family members.
Woodie loved his wife, his daughters, who he was so proud of, his extended family, and countless great friends. Girlie was the love of his life, he adored her. He will be greatly missed by many!
