

Asuncion Cortes Herrera, 86, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed peacefully at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain, on June 8, 2013, surrounded by her caring children. She was the beloved wife of the late Raymond Herrera.
Born in Torrelavega, Spain, and resident of New Britain for the past 58 years, she was the daughter of the late Santiago Cortes and Asuncion Gomez. She was a member of Saint Joseph Church.
She is survived by her loving children James Herrera, his wife Irene, of Avon, and Irene Matulis, of Berlin; three granddaughters whom she adored, Laurelin and Sarah Matulis and Maureen Herrera. In addition she leaves her devoted sisters Josefina and Luisina Cortes both of Spain, brother-in-law Moses Herrera, his wife Paula and their son Richard, all of New Britain, and several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her siblings Romana, Santiago and Manolo Cortes all of Spain and her caring son-in-law James Matulis.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects on Wednesday, June 12, from 5-8 PM at the New Britain Memorial - Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Asuncion's life will be held Thursday, June 13, at 10 AM at St. Joseph Church, 195 South Main St., New Britain. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center Foundation - Cancer Fund, 282 Washington St., Hartford, CT 06106.
