Mary M. (O’Brien) Tracy, 104, passed away on September 10, 2024. Mary was born in New Britain to Patrick and Margaret (Gunning) O’Brien. She married John Tracy, Jr. in 1940 and shared 74 years together until his passing in January, 2015. Mary was a lifelong New Britain resident. She was a 1938 graduate of New Britain High School, having been a member of the Beta Mu Sorority. Mary worked for the First National Stores for over twenty years. She was a phenomenal dancer and participated in Father Brophy’s Minstrels at St. Mary’s Church where she danced on roller skates! She was invited to try out with the Radio City Rockettes in NYC but her Dad felt she was too young. Mary was an avid duck pin bowler for many years (high game 168!). Mary will be missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends including the Westfarms Mall walkers. She is survived by two sons, John Tracy III (Belle) of Glastonbury and James Tracy (Kristina) of Wethersfield; her loving sister Margaret (Peg) Meotti of South Glastonbury who she was extremely close to (they talked every day) and shared many memories with; four grandchildren Kelli Hurlburt (Chuck) of Hadley, MA, Lori Steenkamp (Jack) of Natick, MA, Ryan Tracy of Framingham, MA. and Bridget Altaffer (Casey) of West Barnstable, MA; five great grandchildren Aaron Hurlburt (Haley), Ethan Hurlburt, Benjamin Steenkamp, Emily Steenkamp and Rachel Steenkamp; two step grandchildren Pamela Dion (and partner Bruce), and John Dion (and partner Sue and daughter Tara and husband Kirk) and one step great grandchild Alexis Altaffer. Mary is survived by many cherished nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was predeceased by her two brothers and their wives, Jim (Harriet) O’Brien and Jack (Margaret) O’Brien, a very special niece Maureen O’ Brien, two special aunts, Anne G. and Nelle T. O’Brien and a special brother-in-law Joseph Meotti. Mary’s family is indebted to Julie Green Tursunova, her long-time companion, who has made it possible for Mary to enjoy living at home these last many years. Thank you for everything Julie. The New Britain Memorial/Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Avenue, New Britain is assisting the family. (Donations may be made in Mary’s memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.)
