Cally Beth Kostakis, 76, passed away on October 4 in Montefiore Hospital in Nyack, New York after a brief struggle with complications due to diabetes. Born on May 30, 1949 in New York City, she was the daughter of Anthe Kalafatis and Peter Xirouhakis. First in her family to receive a college education, she went on to touch the lives of young people for many decades, starting with early childhood education and making the leap to college professor. As she put it, she went from changing diapers to grading college essays. She dedicated 24 years to her psychology students at Rockland Community College, who adored her relatability, authenticity, and genuine care. Those she served at her church felt the same way. Besides putting her energy into creative pursuits like crocheting, cooking, and drawing, she was a proud dog mom.
She is survived by her husband, Emmanuel, her three sons Peter (Athanasia), Andrew (Kevin), and Matthew (Andy), and two grandchildren Emmanuel and Eleftherios. She is predeceased by her parents. Although Cally did not have any siblings, she had a special way of making everyone close to her feel like family, including many friends from childhood, several godchildren, and many loved ones that she “collected” along the way. She was a trusted confidante, whose love, laughter, and Bronx accent could fill any room.
Visitations will be held at HiggIns Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 7 from 2:00 pm–4:00 pm and 6:00 pm–8:00 pm. On Wednesday, October 8 a funeral service will be held at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church at 9:30 am. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, NY. Her final resting place will bear the reminder “Only a thought a way,” and the family would love if you could help share memories in her honor at the link below.
