7/19/35 – 12/24/23
Carol Ann Hearne of New City, NY passed away peacefully on Dec 24, 2023 in Westport, CT. Carol was born on July 19,1935 in Bogota, NJ to Rose and Fred Coghlan.
She graduated with honors from Bogota High School and The Berkley Secretarial School in Ridgewood, NJ. She married Peter in 1959 and they moved to New City, NY in 1963 where she lived for 58 years. Four children were born between 1960 and 1964. Once her youngest started elementary school, she accepted a position in the library at Link Elementary School where she was surrounded by books and curious young minds; two things she loved most. She also continued her studies at Rockland Community College, receiving an Associate's Degree. She later returned to the corporate work world as an executive secretary, eventually retiring from Nynex Company.
After retirement Carol remained active in the community. She was a volunteer at Hospice in New City and the Joe Raso Residence, including the bereavement groups for children. She enjoyed her time as a volunteer at the Children’s Museum in Nyack. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed solving the NY Times crossword puzzles daily. She could be found every day at 4:00 pm playing scrabble with her husband Peter. She was a lifelong learner and continued taking classes at the collaborative into her later years. She was an active tennis player, with a deceivingly powerful forehand, and hosted a lady’s card group into her 80's. She developed a skill for needlepoint and a passion for creating intricate angels, befitting her gentle, caring nature. She was a lover of the arts and enjoyed going into NY for the ballet, opera, and plays. She was a member of the Penguin Theatre in Stony Point where she would eagerly await the summer schedule. Baking was a passion, and her holiday cookies were eagerly anticipated by friends and family every year.
Her final three years were spent at The Residence in Westport, CT where she was adored by the staff and other residents for her sweet disposition and her enthusiasm for art, music and dance. The impact she made on others was genuine and heartfelt. Her spirited generosity and fullness of life will carry on in her memory for all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by daughters Jennifer Hearne and Megan Smith and son John Hearne, as well as grandchildren Christopher, Stephen, Caroline, Jillian, Claire and Sophie, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by husband Peter and eldest child Peter.
A funeral mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, January 8th at 11:15am in the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, NJ followed by internment at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet, NY.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY.
