August 17, 1951 – February 11, 2026 Congers, New York
James Kanacherry, of Congers, NY, returned to our Lord on February 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. He was 74 years old.
Born on August 17, 1951, in Pulincunnoo, India, James was the beloved son of Chacko Chacko and Rosamma Chacko. He grew up surrounded by family, faith, and lifelong friendships that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He shared his childhood with his siblings Rosamma Joseph, Leelamma Thomas , Tomy P Chacko (Late), Chacko Joseph, and Sunny Jacob. Even after building a life in the United States, he cherished bringing his family back to Pulincunnoo to show his three boys where he came from and to connect them with the deep roots and enduring relationships he treasured.
James began his career as a high school mathematics teacher in India, a role that reflected his patience, discipline, and desire to guide others toward success. On August 14, 1983, he married the love of his life, Annie James. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, devotion, and sacrifice. In 1990, James and Annie immigrated to the United States with their two sons, Jemy and Thomas, sacrificing all they knew in search of greater opportunities for their family. In 1991, they welcomed their youngest son, Joseph, completing their family.
A devout Catholic, James was deeply involved in his church community. He faithfully served at Holy Family Syro Malabar Church, assisting the parish priest during Holy Mass, helping with cleaning and setup, principal and director of children’s religious studies and offering his time wherever it was needed. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and guided his quiet acts of service throughout the course of his beautiful life.
James found joy in life’s simple pleasures—especially tending to his vegetable garden during the summer months, where he could spend hours nurturing what he planted.
He was known for his kindness, gentle spirit, and infectious smile. He had a remarkable habit of calling friends and family on their birthdays, no matter how busy life became. From lending a listening ear to offering thoughtful advice, James was always there for those in need. His generosity extended beyond borders, as he regularly supported charitable causes in India.
Above all, James was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His selfless love, compassion, and unwavering commitment to laying a strong foundation for his children will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Annie; their children, three sons and daughter in-law, Jemy, Thomas & Mintu, and Joseph; his cherished grandchildren, Ava and Adelyn; and many loving brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
