

Ferdinand "Fred" Sauer was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 23, 1923. He passed away on August 9, 2014. He attended Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, NY. He had a distinguished career as a mechanical engineer, finishing his career with the Nestle Corporation. During his long career, he worked with organizations such as NASA, RCA and General Dynamics.
Fred was the son of Fred and Erna (VonWedel). Following high school and a brief period of work, he enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He served with distinction as a Deck Captain aboard the USS Suwannee during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October of 1944. During the course of battle, he sustained significant injuries while saving the lives of a number of other sailors.
He was married to Alice (Gehm) Sauer in 1949 until her death in 1991. Fred was active in community events as a life member of the Elks, VFW and American Legion. Fred was a longtime resident of Nanuet, NY and Naples, FL.
He is survived by his son Peter Sauer (Elisabeth) of Waltham, MA; his daughter Jane Sauer-Glennon of Bonita Springs, FL; grandchildren SST Peter Fred Sauer, Annelie Sauer, Caroline Sauer, and Alice Glennon, and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his longtime companion, Susan Kennworthy.
Family will receive visitors at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service in New City, NY on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A service will take place Saturday 11am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Highview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 or another charity of your choice.
