
James M Sweeney of New York City and Long Beach Island NJ, died suddenly on April 26, 2011 after a brief illness. A 20 year resident of New City, he was born on June 3, 1938 in the Bronx, NY. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School and Iona College in New Rochelle. He served in the US Marine Corps Reserve. Jim had a very successful career as an executive with IBM for 33 years, two of which were spent in the South of France, where many of his happiest family memories took place. He stepped out of retirement to work for the AFL-CIO for the past ten years. His most joyous and important times were spent with his loving family. He was married to Elizabeth Sweeney for 30 years. Jim is predeceased by his parents, James and Agnes. He will be sorely missed by his children and Carolyn (Bill) Murnane, of Wayzata, MN, Margaret Cooney (David) of Manhattan, Christine (Gavin) Rees of Manhattan, and James (Jennifer) Sweeney of West Nyack. He is also survived by ten loving grandchildren, Andrew, Kate, and Matthew Murnane, Liam and Evelyn Cooney, Willliam and James Rees, and Kate, Finn, and Ella Sweeney. In addition, Jim is survived by his siblings John (Maureen) Sweeney of Bethesda, MD, Cathy (Greg) Hammill of West Hempstead, NY, and Peggy (Ted) King of Glen Rock NJ and several neices, nephews, and grandneices and nephews. Visiting will be held Friday April 29, 2011, 2-4 and 7-9PM at the Higgins Funeral Home 321 South Main Street New City, NY 10956. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:00 AM, Saturday April 30, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, West Nyack, NY. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
