He leaves behind his loving, loyal and devoted wife, Marian S. Toner, of 54 years, his son James, daughter Jennifer Martorelli (Toner), son-in-law Louis Martorelli and his six grand-children: Emily Toner (14), Grace Toner (13), Olivia Toner (12), Sean Toner (11), Vincent Martorelli (12) and Andrew Martorelli (10). He was predeceased by his parents and sister Frances Martucci. He also leaves behind many loving family members including five sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Jim was born on October 9, 1937 to James and Sally Toner, an Irish immigrant family in Bronx, New York. It was there, at an early age he was taught love of God and family and instilled with a hard work ethic. Jim loved his sports and was an avid New York Yankees, Giants, Knicks and Rangers fan or any team one his grand children played for. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School and Saint John’s University in New York.
He retired with over 20 years of service from the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 2008 where he was instrumental in enhancing international sales and overnight service. He forged life-long relationships with his fellow postal workers and enjoyed having everything he ordered delivered via USPS or not delivered at all.
In 1963, he married the love of his life, Marian Toner (D’Alesio) and started their family. With the birth of their children, Jim became heavily involved with the local church and community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Rockland Umpires Association, the Pearl River Elks Club and the Valley Cottage Indians Pop Warner Football league. It was through these associations he could meet, teach, educate and make smile the many young men and women of today. He made friends easily and was quick with a joke, hug and a smile. He was a man who could be counted on day or night to help anyone anyway he could. Above all he loved his family with all his heart and soul. He will be greatly missed.
