

Joan F. Hutton, a long-time resident of Stony Point, New York, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025 in Norwalk, Connecticut. She was 91. Joan was born on August 31, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, to Hugo and Florence (Miller) Kallmeyer. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother William Kallmeyer, two sisters, Dorothy Lukacovic and Margaret Toms, sister in law Dorothy Kallmeyer, and brothers in law Frederick A. Schroeder, Jr. M.D. and Rudolph P. Lukacovic. Joan is survived by three loving children, including one son, John J. (Francine) Hutton, and two daughters, Lynne A. Colavita, and Jennifer J. Braunagel. She is also survived by nine grandchildren whom she adored; Matthew, Christopher, Caroline, and Olivia Colavita, John and Brian Hutton, and Michael (Liz) Braunagel, Andrew and Jenna Braunagel. She is also survived by her sister in law Geraldine A. Schroeder, several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Joan graduated from Great Neck High School in Great Neck, New York, in 1950, earned a B.S. with distinction, in Education in 1956, and a M.S. in Education in 1973, both from the State University of New York at New Paltz. During her undergraduate years, she was a member of the Clio Sorority where she made life-long friends.
Joan was a dedicated, enthusiastic, and inspiring elementary school teacher for over forty years, primarily in the North Rockland Central School District. While a teacher, she also worked at the Rockland Teachers Center. She volunteered for many organizations throughout her life, including Helen Hayes Hospital for almost twenty years, Parents Without Partners and Meals on Wheels.
Joan loved to play tennis and was part of a weekly playing group for many years. She loved the arts and would attend many operas, dance and theatrical performances with friends. Joan also loved to travel. After she joined the Stony Point Senior Club, she worked as the Senior Citizens’ Leader in charge of trips, a position in which she used her teaching skills to enhance each adventure. She was a lifelong learner, cared deeply for others, and believed in giving back for all that she was given. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate to know and love her.
Friends may visit on Wednesday, February 12th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service, Inc., 321 South Main Street, New City, New York. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 13th at 11:00 a.m. at New Hempstead Presbyterian Church, 484 New Hempstead Road, New City, New York. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack, New York.
