
Joseph P. (Joe) McCullagh, a resident of Garnerville, NY for 52 years, passed away in Nyack, NY on April 3, 2020. He was 85 years old. The sixth of seven children born to Patrick McCullagh and Mary Tunney, he grew up in the Bronx. Joe was a 1953 graduate of All Hallows High School where he excelled at sports and was captain of the basketball team. He graduated from Iona College in 1976. Joe served with the U.S. Army in Berlin, Germany from 1957 to 1959 and was a member of the New York City Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1984 as a detective in the Detective Borough Manhattan South Homicide Squad. For 35 years Joe was the co-owner of Renew-It Shoe Repair in Nanuet, NY, retiring just one year ago. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Madeline, Jack (wife Joan), Patricia McMahon (husband Vincent), Tom (wife Terry) and Bro. Martin D. McCullagh, C.F.C. He is survived by his wife Barbara, whom he married in 1963 in the Bronx at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church; his children Paul, Joan and Carol; his grandchildren Samantha and Ryan; his brother Jimmy; and 17 nieces and nephews. Joe was an avid golfer and he leaves many friends. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. A private burial service was held at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet. A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
