Mary Beth Murtha

Mary Beth Murtha age 57 years of Nanuet, New York passed away on September 12, 2016. Mary Beth was born in Bronx, NY to James C. Murtha and Mary Jean Murtha (deceased) on July 15, 1959. She attended St. Augustines, Albertus Magnus High School and Mount St. Mary’s College. She worked in nursing, office administration and as a caregiver.

She is predeceased by her beloved son, Matthew Nematz. Mary Beth is survived by her father James, her brothers John and James Murtha, sisters Megan Scarpelli, and Amy Badlam. Also survived by 8 nieces and 3 nephews.

Mary Beth was active in helping to fight addiction and in support of mental health care. She often shared her story of her son’s addiction so that others might learn from her experiences. Through this work Mary Beth touched and transformed many lives. Her family is so very proud of the work she was able to do despite her own personal illness. Mary Beth’s life is a true testament of grace, hope and kindness.

Visitation will be on Friday, September 16th from 7-9PM at Higgins Funeral Home, New City NY. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 17th, 10am at St Augustine Church in New City, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to TROSA(Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers), 1820 James Street, Durham, North Carolina 27707.
