With hearts full of love and cherished memories, we celebrate the life of Roberto Casanova, Sr., who passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, at the age of 64. A father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, Robert’s presence brought warmth, laughter, and unwavering support to those he cherished.
He is survived by his children, Theresa, Robert, and Angelina, as well as his bonus daughters, April and Yahaira, who held a special place in his heart. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Leonard II and Nylah, along with his beloved bonus grandchildren, Isaac, Lydia, CJ, and Ciarah each of whom he adored. He also leaves behind two turtles, which he treasured and raised for 30 years. Robert found immense joy in his role as an uncle, especially in the lives of his nieces Margaret, Samantha, and Jessica, and great nephew, Mason– all of whom he cherished. He is predeceased by his father, Luis Casanova, and sister, Lillian Casanova.
Born on December 29, 1960, in Manhattan, NY, to Mildred and Luis Casanova, Robert was the eldest of three siblings, sharing a special bond with his younger brother, Jaime. He grew up in the Bronx, where he spent his youth playing handball and stickball, mastering martial arts, and embracing a deep curiosity for technology. An incredibly sharp mind, Robert pursued a career in IT and cybersecurity, making his mark as a dedicated Director of Cybersecurity for 26 years. His passion for martial arts led him to Guided Chaos Adaptive Defense, where he achieved the rank of third-degree black belt, a testament to his discipline and commitment.
Yet, beyond his professional and martial arts achievements, Robert’s true passion was salsa dancing. For over 25 years, the rhythm of salsa filled his life, a love that was sparked by Lydia Casanova, the love of his life. Determined to become her dance partner of choice, he immersed himself in the world of salsa, dancing their way through summers at Orchard Beach, hosting dinners for family and friends, and traveling— including visiting their beloved ancestral homeland, Puerto Rico. Even after Lydia’s untimely passing, Robert found solace and connection within the salsa community, where he built lifelong friendships that became his second family. True to his spirit, he danced until the very end.
Robert will be remembered for his sharp wit, dark humor, unwavering loyalty, and the way he carried himself as the ultimate gentleman and salsero. Stubborn yet thoughtful, protective yet giving, he was a man whose presence left an unforgettable impact on all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and rhythm lives on through the memories shared by his family and friends. Though he is no longer physically with us, Robert’s spirit continues to move—like the beat of a salsa song—forever alive in the hearts of those who loved him.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 6th from 4:00 - 8:00pm at Higgins Funeral Home.
Flowers can be sent to Higgins Funeral Home at 321 South Main Street New City, NY.
