Mr. Scaria Thomas (Kunjumon) was called home on October 29th, 2019. He was born on April 27, 1944 to Varkey Scaria and Mariamma Scaria in Thiruvandoor, Kerala, India and was the second youngest of eight children.
While in India, he proudly served his country in the Indian Air Force. He met the love of his life, Leelamma, over a very special cup of tea and they were married in 1974. They soon started a family and immigrated to the United States in 1982. They settled in Yonkers, NY, where he worked as a machine operator at Stewart Stamping and raised their three children.
In 1989, Kunjumon moved with his family to Rockland County, New York. Many of his most cherished memories were made with his close friends there. They have been a constant source of strength and comfort to him and his family.
Kunjumon was an active member of the St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Yonkers and appreciated the love and compassion his faith community generously gave him. His life was also impacted in a significant way by The Yonkers Prayer Group, which he joined in the early 1980’s. He valued their commitment to grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus and the group became like a second family.
He was blessed to see his family grow and one of his favorite roles was being the proud grandfather of seven beautiful grandchildren. He found joy in creating community, making people laugh with his humor and energetic personality, cooking for friends and family, and serving others. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and so much more. He loved life and cherished being with his family and friends both here in the United States and in India. Even though he faced several health issues later in life, he remained steadfast in his faith in God and in his love for his family.
His loss is felt tremendously by his family and friends. Pappa is remembered with the greatest love and is survived by many: his wife, Leelamma, his children and their spouses, Reena/Jobby, Leena/Sanjay, and Zachariah/Rowena, his grandchildren, Jasmine, Maya, Alaina, Joshua, Olivia, Owen, and Hannah, his brother and sisters in India and his extended family there, including his many nieces and nephews, whom he loved like his own children. He is reunited with his parents and brothers who preceded him in death.
Revelation 21:4: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
