Sr. Margaret Hartling

Born in the Bronx, NY, on April 18, 1937, Margaret was the daughter of John and Rosina Small Hartling. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1955, and received the name Sister John Rose. She professed her first vows in 1957 and final vows in 1962.

Sister Margaret earned a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill,NY, in 1960 and an MS in Administration from Fordham University, Bronx, NY, in 1965. Sister Margaret began her teaching ministry at St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill,NY (1957-1960); Albertus Magnus HS, Bardonia, NY (1960-1967); Holy Trinity HS, Hicksville, NY (1967-1998); Assistant Principal, Our Lady of Lourdes HS,Poughkeepsie, NY (1998-1999); Assistant Principal, Coleman HS, Kingston, NY (1999-2002); Lecturer, Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY (2003-2009); Administrative Assistant at Villa St. Joseph and Math tutor, Saugerties, NY (1998-2010); and Villa St.Joseph Staff (2010-2015).

Sister Margaret was predeceased by her parents, John and Rosina Small Hartling. She is survived by her sister, Rosemary Peck (Robert), and her brother, John (Karen) as well as nieces, nephew, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.

Visitation is Tuesday, March 24, 2026 from 9:30 to 10:30AM at Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill, NY on Tuesday, March 24 at 11:00AM.

Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Arrangements are by Higgins Funeral Home.
