

Douglas J. Smith, age 88 of River Falls, WI passed away February 5, 2023, surrounded by family, at St. Therese Hospice Care after a short battle with cancer. Doug was born December 3, 1934 in North Mankato, MN to Lester and Alice Smith. He joined the Army and served in the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper from August 1955 until August 1963. During his service, Doug and his family lived in Kentucky, Germany and California.
Doug moved back to Minnesota in 1976 and worked with his brothers Harlan (Lefty) and Ken (Butch) in the Smith Roofing business. He moved to River Falls, WI in 1996 where he owned a handyman business. Doug was very involved with the Kinnic Falls Rehab Center and offered many jobs to residents, trying to get back on their feet. He was active in AA and had just received his 29 year sobriety pin.
Doug is survived by his children Bret (Michael) Dallas, TX, Bart (Patty) Amboy, MN, Patrice (Clint), Granada, MN, Douglas (Beth), Mankato, MN, and Matt (Julie) Crystal, MN, grandchildren, Eric, Tara, Genci, Nathan, Brandon, Dillon, Logan, Samantha, Cheyenne, Jackson, Chloe, Jacob, Matelyn and Jameson, and great-grandchildren, Eric Jr., Emily, Destyni, Zion, Scarlett, Violette, Maisy, Briena, Dayvani, Carter, Gage, and Xzavier, son-in-law Luke Johnson Mankato, MN, and many friends.
Doug is preceded in death by his daughter, Pam; brothers, Harlan and Ken; sisters, Pat and Amy. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery and a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
